Adulthood is often portrayed as a finish line, as if turning 18 suddenly makes you grown and fully prepared to take on the world with everything you’ve learned so far. For many, including myself, that wasn’t the reality. At a time when I was emotionally and logistically vulnerable, a distant family member stepped in with love and a home. The experience was transformative, even before I had words for it, and I knew deep down that passing forward that kind of healing would become part of my life’s work.

As I trained with pioneers in the field of Reactive Attachment Disorder, I began to understand the pieces that had made recovery possible for me: connection, safety, and a sense of belonging, along with opportunities to rebuild what trauma had interrupted. Working with youth confirmed what I had lived myself—healing is not about forcing growth but about creating spaces where missed steps can be revisited, and hope can take root again.

Halfway Through The Woods exists to do just that. We create opportunities for young people to reconnect with themselves, their community, and the developmental experiences that trauma may have delayed or disrupted. Here, healing is nurtured, resilience is built, a sense of belonging is restored, and new pathways forward become possible—so that becoming an adult feels less like falling off a cliff and more like a supported, empowering journey.
